Title: A couple of questions if I may.........
Post by: Anchorman on April 21, 2016, 07:44:34 pm
Does anyone else's diesel Rev it's nuts off when started from cold. I'm concerned there is no oil at the top end at first.

Does anyone else's indicators switch on very easy?  I really have to be careful when trying the 3 flash indicate or it just clicks into "on".

Mine starts up at sensible revs from 'proper' cold - after it's been left overnight, for example. But a few times I've noticed it will rev excessively if started from 'lukewarm' - for example if it's restarted after standing for several hours. It's on my list of things to have a chat with a dealer about when I get time...

yes, that sounds very similar - mainly from a few hours stand.

All in all it's been quite a mild winter when all is said and done and I can only remember one really cold day shortly after picking up my 'Tug' which was 1st October. If memory serves, yes it did rev up quite violently for a brief period before settling down and I personally wouldn't worry too much about the 'top end' being dry as diesels are built like Sherman tanks. Re the blinker - no, can't say I've noticed anything odd in that regard: works as it should.

OK linked thread says it all but I’m just a bit old fashioned and don’t like a rested engine to rev quite so fast from start.  It isn’t like a choke on a petrol, it’s somewhat faster and I would be more comfortable if it quickly sped up from rest.

Still, its how they are by the looks of things.  Thanks folks.

I sent an email to mazda complaining about the high start up revs in warmer weather, only to be given reasons for it.

Personally I was brought up to believe that a cold engine should be started and the oil allowed to circulate before revving it, and I still believe that to be true.

The high revs may benefit the emmisions system, but not the engine, most wear takes place while cold, or that was what was wrote back in the day.

it only does it now and again as a strict set of criteria needs to be met before it does it. If you have an auto though you can put it straight into drive with foot on the brake and it goes immediately down to normal revs. If you have a manual then you probably have to put up with it and try to drive off as soon as possible. I agree with previous posters though that high revs and a stone cold engine with no oil at the top end dont go together.
