Title: Clutch / gears
Post by: kiakid2 on September 13, 2015, 06:04:21 pm
When moving off and engaging first gear I can feel mild vibration while the clutch pedal is being pressed down. Moving from 1 to 2 gear the linkage seem a bit notchy and when in 4 gear a slight whine is noticeable when slowly accelerating. 5-6 gear change sticks half way and in not as smooth as other changes.

Is this normal on the AWD version – Manual 175ps Sport Nav?

What sort of mileage have you done? I had an issue on my 2012 model (same engine and transmission) with the gear lever vibrating in 6th at 70 which drove me mad for a while. Eventually found that there was a fault in the gearbox which had to be partially rebuilt, this was at about 55k miles. After that was done, the 5-6 change had a habit of baulking sometimes. Occasionally had to drop the clutch in neutral when it wouldn't go into 6th.

Only turned 4200 mile, bought at the end of august from a main dealer having been used only by the sales manager.

I'd take your car back in, that doesn't sound right to me.

Mine has done 24,000 miles and the gearchange has always felt a little notchy esp between 2nd and 3rd but the whine, stickiness and vibration you're getting sounds odd.

^^^^ Agree with this.

I do know of one case of Mazda replacing a quite new CX5 for a customer (after a lot of aggro) where the gearbox kept jumping into neutral under load. I know it's a different problem, but still...

My car has been returned to the dealer and the gearbox removed for inspection. As yet they have found nothing obvious apart from some swarf.
Mazda asked the dealer to strip the box to the last component and measure everything, so last week they measured the synchro’s, shafts, bearings and selector rods etc and now this week they are measuring the angle of each gear tooth and still there is nothing obvious, nearly three weeks down the line and no way ahead…………..

My manual box is faultless but I've only done about 15K miles.

I would insist on a replacement box.

^^^^ Agreed.
The fact that they found swarf is worrying, that's what caused my turbo bearings to fail as it had blocked the oil feed to the bearings. It's a known problem on an early batch of engines.

Update

After four weeks I now have my car back - Two of the shafts in the gearbox were found to be out of manufacturing tolerance and a new gearbox has been fitted.
As to the vibration through the clutch pedal, well that still remains so I will have to live with it, as nothing is obviously wrong – and I have had a second opinion at a different garage who felt it was “grinding” but in the absence of a comparable car to test drive he was unable to suggest anything.

Only time will tell!

four weeks!

good they've replaced the gearbox but it might be worth you seeing if you can locate a same model demo at a Mazda dealer somewhere to compare with your own

If I get any vibration through the clutch pedal I don't notice it.
What I have got is a dodgy clutch switch, sometimes I have to lift off and reapply to start the car.
