Turbo faults
« on: May 18, 2016, 06:38:50 pm »
I have started a new thread as the previous one is dated and what I am experiencing could well effect others.

As you can see below the issues I have experienced do seem to have occurred previously and when explaining to the "technician" (sure they used to be mechanics) he stated they had heard of the problems relating to early CX-5 s and the hardening of the cam shaft.

I do wonder if the reason this did not make apparent earlier was because of the flush undertaken with the last recall at service in September!!!

I am looking for information re the previous "an odd one" BigAl

I have a 3 year (2012) old CX-5 which to date has been faultless and demonstrated the reliability I have come to expect from Mazda>
Unfortunately last week 10 weeks out of warranty while going up Reigate hill on the M25 (J9 - J8) the turbo stopped working leading to a total loss of power, Fortunately I was able to coax it to Godstone (downhill) at J6, where the warning lights for engine inspection came on. I managed a further 50 100 yards to get to  a safer place to stop before the engine cut out due to the DPF sooting up, due to the poor burn with out the turbo.

Having been recovered to my local (supplier)dealer who have now diagnosed a new Turbo is required and excessive cam shaft wear, this for a vehicle just over 3 years old and fully dealer serviced.

In relation to the post "an odd one" this seems like a known fault for the early 2012 CX-5 with the hardening process of the camshaft. If you have any further details it is my intention to seek assistance towards the costs, estimated £2500+

Cheers

Andy

This does sound like the same as happened to me, the loss of power, warning lights, etc. My understanding was that it was a manufacturing fault, affecting some of the first production batch of 2.2d engines. Incomplete flushing of the engine during assembly allows some very fine oil ways feeding the turbo bearings to remain partly blocked, starving them of oil. As I understood it, the turbo itself was a new design (something to do with the bearings) and had quite a high oil demand. I saw the failed turbo, there was about 2-3mm play in the shaft and bearings. The camshaft was affected by the same issue. Suggest you contact Mazda directly if the dealer is unsure, my dealer at the time had no issues getting it sorted, other than it took some time to get the parts.

Alan

Edit - just reread my description at the time, it was actually debris from improperly hardened camshaft which blocked the oil ways. Memory obviously not what it was...

I would be looking for a new engine FOC, or take Mazda to court.

Its a known problem on the early engines.

Big AL

Mazda have offered to cover 65% of the cost which will still leave me paying nearly £1000.

Would you have the details of the dealer who dealt with your claim and a rough idea of when?

Cheers

Wow - great news!  :D

And a helpful precedent if anyone else suffers the same problem (mine built late 2013 so hopefully okay).

The precedent is not in relation to warranty but as this stems from a manufacturers fault which Mazda were already aware off the issue would be one of "Fit for purpose".

Though if the numbers escalate it dose beg the question of whether the affected cars should have been recalled as in theory they are a ticking time bomb for there owners.

Fortunately my CX-5 is only 10 weeks out of warranty and dealer serviced so I think if it came to litigation they would have struggled to argue it was normal wear.

We are having a similar problem with  our Cx5, 4 months out of warranty.  There is a problem with the turbo camshaft. No indication from dealer that this is a recognised problem. It's only when I've looked on here that it seems others are having g the same problem. The mazda dealer is blaming our local, non mazda garage for using wrong type of 5w30 oil (synthetic instead of semi-synthetic) even though the handbook only specifies 5w30. Interested to hear how others got on. Mazdacustomer care have said they are not interested in helping in anyway as not serviced at a mazda dealer.
