I have a 2015 Mazda CX 5 auto and my query relates to the unlocking of the tailgate.
Here it is - If the car is in a "locked" mode and I press the unlock button on the remote, I find that the tailgate remains locked, although the main for doors unlock as normal.
So, in order to access the boot, I find that I need to physically open, say the driver's door, after which I can open the tailgate using the switch button over the number plate. Although I have been through the manual, I'm unable to see anything that addresses this.
Is there a way of opening the tailgate without opening one of the car doors? Am I missing something, is it a safety thing or can the unlocking function be re-programmed via the screen on the dash so that I can simply unlock the tailgate via the key?
Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Are you trying this with the engine running as my tailgate (2012 model) only opens when the engine is switched off

There was a section in the manual about a tailgate lock / unlock second button that I never understood, it could be to do with that. I never use the remote key buttons, I just walk up to the car and am able to open the tailgate.
I have found that if the car is running and I have my foot on the brake the tailgate won't open (presumably to stop people nicking stuff when you're stopped at traffic lights), but if I apply the handbrake and take my feet off the pedals then a passenger can hop out and retrieve what they need from the boot.

The second button locks the car (but doesn't unlock it). It's quite a bit over to the right of the 'normal' button, and feels more like one of the door buttons ie a bit more like a nipple.
Edit... I believe this is only fitted to the Sports Nav with Keyless entry.

Is this a first for a car forum?

Engine switched off. Problem is when using the remote button (key fob), it only releases the doors and not the tailgate, so I have to physically open a door before the tailgate will unlock!!

Try pressing the unlock button twice just in case?

Pressing the unlock button twice does't solve matters. Maybe I should take it in to have it looked at.

does it work without touching the remote key fob at all, just walking up and opening the tailgate?

On my 175 Sport nav, I use the keyless entry AND the walk away locking (which is enabled separately on the car settings menu).
1) If I walk up to the car, and open the tailgate by pushing its button, the doors do not unlock. Close the tailgate and it locks as you walk away, but there's no double beep
2) If I walk up to the drivers or front passenger door and press one of those buttons, all doors AND the tailgate unlock. Close the tailgate and/or doors and you get the double beep

Well done Al, that's EXACTLY the same as what I was thinking but somehow hadn't managed to say coherently..!
From the later edit to post no. 3 perhaps this is a Sport Nav keyless only thang...I hadn't realised
