Anyone else had this?
« on: January 12, 2017, 09:27:24 am »
I've now done 30k miles on the original tyres and am getting a low droning noise from them on some road surfaces. Tread depth is currently about 4-5mm. The strange thing is, I remember having the same on my previous CX5 at about the same mileage - checking back, I changed those at 33K. I'm assuming it's something inherent to the tyres - Toyo Proxes R36 225/55 R19 99V (on a 2.2D 175). Has anyone experienced the same?

Last time when I changed I had the same again as there wasn't a lot of choice available. I think there's more now, so may look at other makes as one thing I found with the Toyo ones is that they're useless in snow!

Changed my Toyos for Michelins about 34k miles, didn't have the droning noise but felt the Toyos had poor grip in the wet. Am happy with the Michelins though.

Can't say I have Al,  but I've got a brand new section of m1 tarmac that I can't test both cars on. 90% of time I've have radio on. Will check next time, running same tyre on wife's car, mine has proxel2 on. How much did the Michelins cost per corner Twabrigs?

Tempted by these http://www.blackcircles.com/catalogue/michelin/latitude-sport-3/225/55/R19/V/99/f?returnurl=%2forder%2ftyres%3f&tyre=33597991 the Toyos are supposedly 1db quieter but only score a C for wet performance.

Would really like to get a separate set of winter wheels/tyres, but it's a company car so that's not happening!

Hi guys, those are the same tyres I've got, they were £155 each fitted by National so your blackcircles price is good Al

What's your opinion of them in bad weather compared to the Toyo ones?

Mines a company car also Alan, which lease company are you with? If and when you need a replacement tyre it needs to match the ones fitted, make and model as well as size for the tyre pressure monitoring system to work. I had a burst tyre just before Christmas and for some reason the car was recovered to a local dealer, who quoted me a two week lead time.  Kwikfit got one within a couple of days.

The car is company owned rather than leased. But you're right, changing them might potentially cause issues for the TPMS. Having checked, it looked like the only option for changing the wheels and tyres would be to use 17 inch rims and deeper profile tyres. All the companies who sell wheel/winter tyre packages seem to recommend getting authorisation from the vehicle manufacturer before fitting. It's just too complicated for something that will only really be of benefit for a couple of months at best.

Besides that, if I was the only one able to get anywhere in snow, I'd be expected to pick everybody else up!:-)

Can't say I've really really tested them to be honest, but I am confident they give better grip round a wet roundabout at speed (quiet A road) than the Toyos did.
