Advice on buying a high mileage used CX-5
« on: September 11, 2016, 10:29:14 pm »
Evening board.

Sorry board if I'm jumping straight in and begging you for help but I'm in a quandrary.

I test drove a lovely 2012 2.0 petrol sport CX-5 today but it had 103000 miles on it.

The car looked well cared for and it came with a full Mazda service history.

In the history it said the clutch assy had been changed at 100,000 miles.

My question to you guys is this.

When I took it for a test drive 1st and 2nd were fine but when I put it into 3rd I looked down at the gearbox and thought that didn't sound just right.

4th was OK but 5th might have sounded "weird" but not as bad as 3rd.   6th was ok

After a few minutes the sound didn't appear to be as bad........ Or that could be me getting used to it

Does anyone know if this could be a problem.

Additionally the car only came with 1 key fob.

This fob had a little key hidden inside it.

Will buying a 2nd key, which is a must, be expensive?

Thanks in advance for any help

Ken

Welcome to the forum. There are a few postings about gearbox noises and also about key fobs.   Have a look around I'm sure you will find some answers, or someone will be along to give you some advice.  :)

Welcome to the forum, check out a thread titled "rattle" reference gearbox noise, although with clutch being replaced only 3000 miles ago alarm bells would be ringing in my ears and I would walk away, reference the key fob i would call your local mazda dealer parts dept they will tell you the cost of another key fob. Its wise and handy haven't a second as a back up. Hope this helps in some way

I think there are probably enough CX5s on the used market now that you can afford to be a little more choosy, esp if you are prepared to travel (mine was delivered from 450 miles away, sight unseen).

I think that there isn't enough data around for very high mileage cx5's to say how reliable its likely to be. The new clutch is good but it may have been changed to see if it improved the gearbox and when it didn't just sold the car. It must have done all long drives though to have done that mileage on 1 clutch. If this car is a good buy though depends on how cheap it is, if its not then i would say go for something with more normal mileage on.
