Towbar & Electrics
« on: September 16, 2016, 06:48:01 pm »
Just fitted a OEM towbar and in the process of wiring a dedicated harness.  Anyone else fitted one.

The wiring to the 13 pin socket is very contradicting, no instructions but the internet diagrams show different colors, anyone got any idea?

Are you mad?  ;) ;) Wiring to the manufacturers specs entails taking half the car apart and no, I'm not joking. I've taken a screengrab of a page showing the connection although living in Germany these instructions are obviously in German. That said, it won't be too hard to translate the colours using Google if necessary. The entire wiring document is 11 pages long and takes the form of a pdf document which I can't upload here so if you send me your email address via personal message I can fire it off to you. As said though, it's in German sorry.

It would help to know what colour (and size) differences you are faced with? Or are you now sorted?

All done now, thanks guys.

It was quite simple, about 3 hours.

The bumper remains in place for fitting the towbar itself (witter detachable swan neck), just the boot floor and LHS side panel requires removal for the oem Mazda dedicated wiring.

The most difficult part was channeling the two cables to the battery through the bulkhead.

The instruction were by picture only, so I sat & studied them first for a while.

There is no visable evidence of the towbar until of course you fit the swan neck and the 13 pin connector swings down into place.

I can take some photo's if anyone is interested.

I am about to fit a Brinks towbar to my 2019 CX5. Wiring looks to be much the same as yours, ie a pair of wires to footwell of front passenger.
It says to disconnect the battery - does this cause problems - ie resetting anything.

I’ve had mine disconnected and it didn’t but make sure everything is shut and switched off (doors unlocked but shut) then you don’t leave anything mid cycle.

I had a dealer fitted towbar on my 2019 CX but they didn't update the EMS so the electrics didn't work, something to consider.
