Know your trade in value, and the best broker deals before visiting the dealer.

And don't buy any addons such as gap insurance or paint protection, negotiate a discount for any extras you want such as mats and flaps. (Standard on my last Xtrail but over priced from the Mazda dealer).

I went with a broker, who put me in touch with a Mazda dealer which is 90 miles from me, Petrol Sport Nav, £3k off a cash sale or £4.5k off using finance, I also negotiated free premium mats and a touch-up stick!....did try for a free spare wheel, but they weren't having that!
Local dealer wouldn't come anywhere near.

As a cash buyer, I did the following for my new 2016 car:

1. Asked for their lowest cash price
2. Looked at the best deals on carwow and similar sites and went back to dealer with the numbers (as I really didn't want to have to travel a long way to collect the car) - got another few hundred £'s off
3. Then asked for free accessories.  They cost the dealer less than they're worth to you and anything that requires fitting is essentially free as far as the dealer is concerned.  In my case it was getting the auto-fold mirror kit + fitting, free mats, and free boot protector
4. Ignore the £300 3 year GAP insurance offer they try to sell you and the special 'protection' waxing.  I bought better GAP cover online for £220 covering 4 years.  Bought the waxing 2 cars ago - was a complete waste of money - better off getting a wax job at one of the local hand car washes.

First you need to realistically value your p/x remembering that you wont get the retail price of your car just a trade value. You can enquire on "we buy any car.com" to get a value or look at similar cars on main dealer websites and subtract around £3000 for a trade price. Then go on the new car websites and see what the best prices are for the car that you want and then decide what you think will be a fair price to change. You then go and visit dealers and make it clear that if he comes up with the right price you will sign up today and you try and get a price a bit below your "price to change" but at the death the "price to change". The final negotiation can be finished off with a few dealer add ons thrown in.
