Help me choose
« on: October 14, 2019, 11:04:26 am »
First Time on the forum.

My present car lease is coming to an end just after Christmas, so I am looking around for a replacement and I have decided that I like the looks and specifications of the 2019 Mazda CX-5 Sport Nav+ Automatic in Sonic Silver.

But I have one problem, which engine to choose Petrol or Diesel and what about the AWD model.
Since I am now retired I don't cover a lot of miles per year, my current car is almost three years old with a mileage of 10,345 around town with little motorway travelling. Also I'm not a boy racer

I can choose from :
2.0 PETROL - AUTO - 2 WHEEL DRIVE - 163 BHP - 42 MPG
2.2 DIESEL - AUTO - 2 WHEEL DRIVE - 148 BHP - 51 MPG
2.2 DIESEL - AUTO - AWD                 - 181 BHP - 51 MPG

I would appreciate your input helping me choose.

Until i retired last year I'd been driving 2-3ltr (mainly auto) diesel company cars along with 100's of hire cars all over the world for the past  30yrs.  I knew that once I'd retired my personal car mileage would be minimal as my wife has a car plus I've another one & bikes too. I knew I wanted an SUV style car and limited myself to £30k budget, after trying various makes/models I ended up going for a 2mth old top of the range auto CX-5 petrol. It was £1600 less than an identical diesel they had at the time, I've had it nearly a year now and have covered 6k miles. The mpg ranges according to the on-board figures (which it seems from other members post to be optimistic) between low-mid 30's locally and 38-42 on a motorway run. I've grown to really like the car, it's very quiet & the interior finish is superb, the one thing that's taken some getting use to is the lack of low revs torque & power but still think petrol was the right choice. Personally the 2.0 engine with a turbo or supercharger option would really complete (other than the SAT Nav which is 5hit !!!  >:( >:( >:() an overall excellent vehicle.

With such a modest mileage, and mainly around town as well, I suggest you think very carefully about your choice.  Low mileage diesels are very prone to choked up particulate filters.  I also cover a low mileage (6000 a year) and my own car (three weeks old) is a petrol, Sport Nav with Safety Pack in Crystal Red.  So far I love it.  The higher fuel consumption of the petrol is not so important given the low mileage.
Mary Hinge made derogatory remark about the Sat Nav with which I tend to agree.

I had a CX 5 2.2 sport nav auto(2016) with AWD and covered 16K miles in 3 years, I now have a June 2019 Sport Nav auto petrol (2WD). Worked out the payback for the £1600 extra for the 150 HP diesel was 5-6 years based on 6K per year.Have not noticed a huge difference in fuel consumption as the AWD makes a car less economical anyway. The AWD did not appear to make a great difference to traction etc in the little snow we have had over the last 3 years as the tyres are(Toyo) summer tyres and provide little grip in even a light covering of snow. It takes a little getting used to the lack of low down torque of the diesel but as you are going for an auto this will not result in more left legwork to use the clutch.
My recommendation would be a 2wd petrol auto.

There is no petrol turbo in the U.K. so ignore that and we don’t know that carbon is an issue on the latest Adblue model.

I’ve got AWD because of where I live and you might like the pulling power of a diesel.  Test them and see what you think.

I'm on my third diesel now (2x 175, 1x 184, all AWD). I've driven the 2l petrol and it feels gutless in comparison - it may only be 20hp less, but it only has about half the torque. Having said that, I do 25k miles per year so the diesel is the better choice. For low mileage, the petrol avoids any of the carbon buildup issues (and, as Anchorman says, that may not be an issue on the 184 adblue engine anyway, it's too soon to tell. One other point, though, the official MPG figures. The petrol engines real mpg isn't much lower than the official, but the diesel is much lower. In reality, the diesels do around 40-42 MPG for the higher output engine.
