CX-5 2017 Tailgate upper plastic moulding
« on: April 19, 2019, 09:18:38 pm »
Looking for some advice.

My CX-5 was recently rear ended and needed a new tailgate, rear impact bar and bumper moulding.  Had some problems with the paint matching, reversing camera not working and the tailgate central locking button malfunctioning (now all resolved after a second attempt) but the upper tailgate moulding that fits directly beneath the rear window appears to rattle like it's loose.

Is it attached via clips and is it possible they've just come unclipped and worked lose it could it be something else ?

Can take it back to the repairers but don't have much faith in them now to be honest.

Thanks in advance.

I’ve taken the trim above the rear window off a couple of times to fit a rear camera, that trim is secured with a combination of metal and plastic clips. I’d assume the lower one is similar. Might be worth having someone sit in the boot whilst you drive round the block pressing on each one in turn. My guess would  be that it’s something inside rather than the trim itself?

Thanks for the suggestion. It's going in for its first service in a couple of weeks. I'll get the dealer to check it out and advise.

Some of those panels are glued and clipped. I’m assuming you mean the outside of the car, not the inside.

Yes. The higher outside panel above the number plate that also incorporates the Mazda badge by the look of it. The panel immediately under the rear window.

I’ll look at the parts list for it.

So!  It’s held on with clips but the edges should be stuck down to stop them rattling!  The genuine parts are £2.54 plus VAT each - shown as;

Hi,

I have just fixed a tailgate rattle on my 2014 CX5, took me some time to locate the problem so I thought I would share it. The sound is like a box of tools rattling in the boot when going over small bumps or an uneven surface. After searching this forum to no avail I found a US thread about the external plastic moulding above the rear window - they call it the 'spoiler'. For some reason the fixing bolts, underneath two rubber grommets on the inside on either side of the tailgate, work loose. I found one of mine was missing completely. so replaced it and the rattle got better but didn't go away completely. I then noticed the two external plastic mouldings to either side of the spoiler were also loose, but appeared to be fixed to the spoiler and could only be investigated by removing the spoiler altogether. This wasn't possible as it looks like a special tool is required to release the spoiler's nylon snap fixings, otherwise they will break when levered off. So, I simply put some foam rubber underneath the lower pointed end of each moulding between it and the glass, and now its solid and quiet! Not sure if the 2017 model has the same design spoiler but worth checking out!
