Title: Auto opinions
Post by: BigAl on May 08, 2018, 01:59:21 pm
Giving serious consideration to - what could be - my third CX5. This time it will probably be an auto, though. Does anyone know of any issues or problems relating to the auto box on the 175 Sport Nav diesel?

I couldn't find many horror stories about them.  There's a few on the American forums but they're few and far between, and bear in mind they'll be the 2.5 litre petrol engine.  My CX-5 is a 2014 but relatively low miles (40k) and I've had no problems.  The gearbox is supposeldy "sealed for life" but the general consensus over the pond is that a drain & refill of the box doesn't hurt, perhaps every 50k miles.  There's a filter inside the box according to a youtube video of the guy changing his.

We have had three with the 175 diesel engine.
A 15 reg CX-5, a 65 reg Mazda 6 and a 17 reg CX-5.
All drive nicely and had no problems.
Not a huge mileage covered though.

I would recommend that you get the safety pack though.
The new technology on the latest cars is quite something.

Yes, my current one has that so I would have the same again. I was going to add the radar cruise control, but you can't have that if you want stone leather (figure that one out...)

Long term review here of the diesel auto, although it's the 150PS https://www.telegraph.co.uk/cars/mazda/mazda-cx-5-long-term-test/

Went for the automatic option in the CX-5 this time for two reasons:-

1. Having driven HGV's with manual and auto boxes over the course of 20 years the latter makes for an easier time especially in heavy stop/start traffic which seems to be more the norm nowadays on all types of road.

2. Dislocated my right wrist last year (3rd time i've damaged it ) which made driving a manual vehicle very painful and difficult when the cast came off, now of course it is better but arthritis is getting hold of it, to be expected being over 21 :)

The gearbox I cannot fault at all neither can I deny that MPG is to my surprise much better than I ever expected from an automatic model having on a number of occasions hit 66.5 MPG according to the computer and if you knock 3MPG off for actual as opposed to given it is still remarkable for a big bus

The auto is really good giving smooth changes both up and down the box which you rarely notice and if you require the kick down it acts very swiftly allowing you to make a speedy overtake. All in all I would not go back to a manual box in the CX-5.

( The only problem you all know about but that's it )

I'm no expert on vehicle gearboxes and so won't even attempt to describe the different types. However, as the saying goes, "I know a man who does" who is an engineer and works for one of the well known German vehicle manufacturers. When I discussed this matter with him prior to buying my own CX5 I was advised that the Mazda auto gearbox was based upon a seldom used design nowadays (the main variant being DSG of course) but is probably one of the best and most reliable ever produced and this is it........

@BigAl: Congrats on the order for September. Can I ask you the same question as I have in another thread regarding updated specs of the CX-5........

Had our 175 AWD Auto for 18 months, its now on 75k and auto box is excellent. Smooth, responsive, pretty much always in the correct gear. One of the best auto boxes I have driven, and I used to work for Jaguar.
