Yes, I suspect just about everyone of us diesel owners. It's quite normal so nothing to panic about.

On some days mine fast idles quite noticeably whilst on other days not. I suspect it's dependent upon several factors e.g. temperature and humidity driven by the requirement to meet strict exhaust emissions and hence get the engine up and running optimally in as short a time as possible. Only Mazda know for sure but as said earlier, it's a well known and documented event.

As Deeps says it's perfectly normal, but only happens under some obscure combination of circumstances possibly involving phases of the moon.

Seems odd you've never had it up to now though.

My diesel has always done this over the last 5 years, there does not seem to be any 'normal' conditions that cause it to not occur. This week (cold first thing then warmer later), it starts up fast when backing out of the garage and is back on normal tick-over by the time the doors have closed.

Mine does it most often on cold starts when the ambient air temp is in the low to mid teens.

I can’t believe this question gets asked so often. I have this pdf pinned on the U.K. CX-5 owners Facebook page. It shows all the conditions that raise the idle speed.
