CX-5 rear brake pads wearing
« on: June 30, 2016, 08:00:33 pm »
Had an odd problem the other day, could here my back offside brake squeaking all the time. Had a look at it through the alloy and the disc looked a bit grooved. Whipped off the wheels and found that the the outer brake pad was worn down to the squeal pads but the inner still had plenty of life on it.

Google informed me that they had this problem in America, apparently rust meant the outer brake pad was constantly dragging on the disc. As the car was out of warranty, mazda weren't prepared to fix it. I did get a new set of pads and clips from them which were modified to stop the problem occurring again. Had to fit new discs as well but hopefully this won't happen again!

So how many miles had the rear pads done?
I had a puncture last week so when the wheel was off I glanced at my rear pads, about 50 to 60% worn with 27000 miles. I would normally expect to get 40k from the rear pads so they look on coarse for this.

I had problems with my brakes around the 21k mark. Rear pads (both worn) and discs (grooving) needed replacing, as did the front pads. Front discs fared better and were still going strong around 40k mark, although started to have a slight judder under braking. Last service had the fronts inspected and 1 of the discs was every so slightly warped.

Front pads changed at 20k with 3mm still left, advised that the rear pads would probably  need changing at next year's service with around 30k on. But I do like to use them if you know what I mean against prolonged engine braking.
