Good evening all,
I am almost about to press the button on a new CX-5. I have been an Audi A4 driver for the last 10 years or so, 3 cars over that time, but I've got a bad back nowadays and I've decided to go for something with a higher ride height that's easier to get in and out of and is also a car that isn't as harsh as the Audi S line range always is.
I looked at nearly everything out there, in the UK, with an open mind, from: Kia Sportage, Nissan Qashqai, Volvo XC60, Jeep Cherokee, Hyundai ix35, Range Rover Evoque, Land Rover Discovery Sport, Audi Q3 and Q5... cost isn't my major driver but - heck - if you're looking at an Evoque at £47,000 and a CX-5 at around £32,000 it seems a no-brainer for what you're getting, to me. I'd ideally have liked the CX-3 as it's a beautiful car, but it's too small for me and I can't get past the fact it's got this big 1990s style handbrake taking up loads of space. Odd design choice that.
Anyway, I had a few specific questions I've not been able to pin the dealer down fully on yet, I thought it would be useful for me to ask existing CX-5 owners.
The dealer says that there is no digital speedometer facility in the car and, true enough, I couldn't find one... but that seems weird. Is that truly the case, or can I press some button or twiddle some stalk so that I can see my speed digitally, rather than via a huge retro dial?
The dealer says that the auto-folding wing mirrors only fold on button press, and they don't auto-unfold on engine start and auto-fold on door lock - which is what I'm used to (my partner's Mini Countryman also uses a button!). Then he's told me that a "module" can be fitted to enable this. He said it would be fitted by the dealer, it wouldn't affect warranty and it would cost around £100... does anyone here have experience of what the dealer is referring to? Are we talking hardware module or software tweak?
I plugged in a USB stick with MP3s with embedded cover art today and I was really pleasantly surprised to see the covers on the screen... that was on a CX-3, though... can someone confirm (the dealer says this is the case) that the infotainment system in the CX-5 is exactly the same as in the CX-3?
Kinda nonplussed that there are no hooks at all in the boot. Have I been spoiled with Audi's hooks for the cargo net and their retractable 'curry hooks' in the boot roof? They've been life-savers on many occasion. I do like the way that the seats flip down in the CX-5, though.
BTW... hoping to be getting the Sport Nav 2.2 175ps diesel auto., with the additional super-duper Safety Pack. If that's just a crazy choice, please let me know!
-
Hi and welcome!
I've just ordered my second CX5 (2.2D 175 sport nav manual with safety pack) having again done the rounds of comparing newer models. The Disco is the only one in the class that has lower CO2 emissions (if you have the new 2.0D), and you'd have to wait until Sept for one of those. I test drove the 2.2D 190 version - nice car but I thought it sluggish and heavy-feeling after the CX5. Then the cost of adding all the extras kills it (for me at least, as a company car). Also looked at the CX3, came to same conclusion as you, although the standard handbrake wouldn't put me off.
No digital speedo as you say and have never heard of a possible mod for that.
Johnnyoro has recently had the auto-fold mod added, see - http://mazdacx5forums.co.uk/index.php?topic=45.0 (http://mazdacx5forums.co.uk/index.php?topic=45.0)
Can't comment on the USB as I don't use it much (prefer Spotify) and the older system doesn't show the artwork AFAIK. I think you can only use USB2, not 3. The 2015 CX5 system is, I believe the same as the CX3.
There are two tiedown points, but they are in the back of the seats rather than the floor. Mazda do make some accessories, though.
http://www.mazda.co.uk/buying-owning/accessories/mazda-cx-5/2011-11/ (http://www.mazda.co.uk/buying-owning/accessories/mazda-cx-5/2011-11/)
If you're going for the auto, you could consider adding a maxchip box. The auto real MPG is around 36-37 as opposed to the official 51.4. Zoomer fitted one and is getting 48 MPG indicated. Will probably get one when I get the new car in early August - see http://mazdacx5forums.co.uk/index.php?topic=175.0 (http://mazdacx5forums.co.uk/index.php?topic=175.0)

Thanks.
We took a ride out in one today. The main objective was to check road noise. It's not bad at all. I could hear the rattle of the engine more than anything else... maybe it's a bit less refined but nothing was bad at all. I am positive it would suit me well.
The dealer then also showed us various anchor points (for cargo net, which I'd missed) and also the accessories like foldable box that attaches to rails. All welcome news.
Struggling, just a little bit, with this digital speedometer news. I've gotten so used to it in any car.
I learned that Safety Pack level 1 is probably all I need, not level 2 with the radar cruise control.

It's a minor hardware job, but well worth having. I paid £125 including fitting, I see on the forum others have been quoted anything up to double that, someone paid just over £100 and one brave soul bought the kit and did it himself. I highly recommend having it. See if you can get it thrown in at a good price as part of sealing the deal to buy the car.
As regards which model. I've got the 2.2D AWD sat nav manual, so can say the engine is plenty powerful enough but I haven't driven the auto. Be aware though that real world MPG will be nothing like that quoted in the brochure. I'm getting about 41MPG max.
-
Had a new one for 6 months now and nothing's gone wrong with it ! I've got the 150BHP model and plenty of power AND fuel economy - really impressed with Mazda (been Toyota for 15 yrs)

So, I thought I'd ruled out the Qashqai because it didn't have an option of heated seats. So I figured I would at least take a look at the Nissan X-Trail, which can have heated seats. I'm in the showroom and I open up the door of a Qashqai to see... heated seats!
It's back in the running. It also has a really nice 5" screen between the main dials behind the steering wheel where it can display a prominent digital speedometer. Also, the auto-folding mirrors work just as I would expect (not by pressing a button). The down side is that the passenger front seat doesn't have electric adjustment (both front seats do on the CX-5)... and the inside looks less refined than the CX-5.
Another downside is that I can only get 2WD on the Qashqai... I thought the time was right to try AWD.
However, the parking assist toys were great fun... doing a bay park and parallel park on automatic was actually enjoyable. I do not think the Nissan infotainment system (or navigation graphics) look as polished as what you get in the CX-5... but I like to really zoom in on my 2D map and I believe the CX-5 could only zoom in to 150 yards, my Audi can zoom in to 30 yards and the Qashqai could zoom in to 50 yards.
The bird's eye view of the car when pootling around was also pretty good fun (a bit blurry sometimes, but worked quite well).
The X-Trail is too big, by the way.
Qashqais are everywhere, whereas the CX-5 is a bit more exclusive... that might sway me a little bit. I need to get in a Qashqai and see whether the engine can drive it OK. I do not mind the CVT gearbox either as that's what I've had in all three of my A4s (I actually quite like CVT).
The LED DRLs on the CX-5 are much nicer!
Today has left me with much to ponder.
-
Something else to consider - residual values. With a lot more squashies on the road, will they be worth as much in three years? I've just part exchanged my CX5 175 sport for the same model again and been given £14.5k for it, that's over 50% of the original price. It's got 65,000 on the clock, by the way...
Having had an original X-Trail about 10 years ago (loved it), I looked at the new one but the extra 10cm length (to allow the 7 seat option) and the lack of a larger diesel engine put me off. The original squashie put me off due to the lack of headroom, but I would consider the newer model (which is available in 4wd, but only with the 130HP engine for some bizarre reason).

Is that what they're called? ::)
Anyway, yes to the strange options (in my mind)... I would've thought you could get an auto. and AWD, but you can't. It's a choice between one or the other. Kinda annoyed me.
I'm taking out a Squashie on Thursday for a half day test drive. Will see if it's got enough grunt and will try out some of the toys.
Watch, I'll find out the perfect car for me (after 3 x A4s over 11 to 12 years) will be a Q3 or Q5 (S line)! Exactly where I don't want to be. :-[
I reckon that I prefer the overall looks of the CX-5. Mazda really should give it a great between-dial display... I'd be there like a ferret up a drainpipe... right now, it's bugging me that I can't have a big digital speedometer.
-
CX-5 has 2 USB sockets, Qashqai has 1.
-
Qashqai was quite nice.
CVT is a pseudo-CVT somehow, there's definitely ratios on there. Grunt was enough for the car, it didn't feel sluggish. Noise of the engine was quite intrusive, road noise at high speed was louder than I'm used to. The central screen was amazing, held my digital speedo nicely, and it's very configurable too. The main display was OK - it recognised my music and album covers straight away, but the screen is facing directly backwards, rather than being angled towards the driver, so there's some glare on it. The car doesn't have voice control! The parking assistance stuff is pretty good. The car seemed to have speed camera alerts - a little warble came up every now and again and I wondered what it was until I tied it in to upcoming fixed cameras.
-
Not impressed at all with the Quasqui's range of engines - very weak
-
Hi... might be true on paper, with it being a 1.6, but it really did not lack poke at all.
Since then I've looked more closely at Honda CR-V (did not like it) and Toyota RAV4 (did not like it)... as well as Volkswagon Tiguan (did like it).
There's always a more reassuring "clunk" when closing the doors on a German vehicle.
Sadly, the Tiguan is £35,245 when configured-up... closely approaching the Q3 which came in at a nice £37,000. While these are less expensive than my current A4, I'm really trying to see if I can increase the ride height while, at the same time, decreasing the bill.
The infotainment system in the Tiguan is really sexy! It's got a Cover Flow type of interface which is touch-screen enabled, so it's just like one of those tablets. I plugged in a USB stick full of MP3s and it read it in no time and the radio stations have logos and all that.
If only Mazda would give me a digital speedo. and auto-folding mirrors on the CX-5. The Design department should be shot for oversights like that.
It's still top. Qashqai is not ruled-out. Q3, which I've been avoiding going to look at, might get a look-in.
-
Hi.
I was quoted £97 and a few pence today for supply and fit for the auto folding mirror kit for my new Sport Nav so I've ordered one. Agree it really should be standard but I don't think the price is too bad. I would have ordered it before delivery if I'd known!
-
If I get a CX-5 then I will get that. I never want to press a button to manually mess around with my auto-folding mirrors.
I am doing a line-by-line compare between the CX-5 and Qashqai now... my heart says CX-5 as I like the style more, I like the interior more, I like the AWD, I like the premium stereo, I like the infotainment system, I like that it has voice control, I like the all-LED headlights, I like the DRLs.
The Qashqai has proven to be a nice drive, I like the central information display, I like the parking assistance toys, I like the speed limit detection and display, I like the fixed speed camera warning. I like the price.
It's almost kinda like what one has the other doesn't... in a very deliberate way.
I checked out the Tiguan in great detail last weekend and I liked that too, as I said.
What is still getting my goat about the CX-5 is that there's a big LCD display in the main cluster, where loads of information can be displayed and all I want is a digital speedo.. >:(
-
You have been doing such an in depth investigation on your potential purchase and to me it seems like you have virtually made your mind up.
However you keep banging on about a digital speedo. It's obvious that you like everything else and Mazda are not going to suddenly put a digital speedo in for you. So it seems to me that you need to accept that fact and either jump for the CX-5 and live without a Digital Speedo or walk away if it means that much to you.
-
What about the exclusivity factor? There's a million Qashquais on the road - sometimes it seems every other car is a Qashquai. I've only ever seen one facelift CX-5 on the road and a handful of pre-facelift models. That and the fact that I'm a big Mazda fan since owning a 6 Sport a few years back made it an easy choice for me. The Qashquai is fine but too common and just didn't do it for me when I sat in one.
-
Or get a mazda 3 or cx 3 and get 2 digital speedos, lol
-
Guys,
All good points. The exclusivity is factor, true. There's a lot to like about the Qashqai actually, but exclusivity isn't it. If I may drag us back to the digital speedometer... I found this URL - http://www.autoguide.com/auto-news/2014/12/2015-mazda-cx-5-consumer-review.html - that says, I quote, "She also wasn’t a fan of the gauge cluster’s menu setup. Although it may seem like a small detail, the digital speedometer and clock both can’t be shown in the gauge cluster at the same time." from the What She Didn't Like section... now, is this the same car, or what, 'cos I couldn't give a toss about the time? If I have get a digital speedo over the time, I'll take it - but everyone's adamant it isn't there at all!
Anyway, going in to see a Q3 (which is probably going to be very like my A4) on Friday... just to maybe get it out of my system, but maybe to choose it (better the devil you know?).
-
CX-3 is a lovely vehicle... and comes with the HUD too... but the stupid 90s handbrake is really off-putting.
-
It is indeed lovely BUT there's no chance anyone would want to be in the back, especially if they are over 6ft.
-
Fair comment. CX-3 caught my eye but CX-5 is where the serious intent is. Regarding this digital speedo. is it a pipe-dream or is there something that can be 'twiddled' to get it, as the article I linked to seems to describe?
Think I may head back down to the Dealer.
-
I went back to the Dealer.
Re-confirmed that there's no digital speedo. available in the right-hand dial. Strangely enough you can flick through various figures including one that is reporting an average speed!!! Great. No use for that.
I created a scene and ended up lying on the floor blubbing.
This is probably the end of the road for the Mazda CX-5. The designers have even rubbed salt into the wounds because some of the other Mazda cars have 2 digital speedometers!
I educated the Dealer anyway, as he didn't know there was a £100 fix available for the door mirror folding FUBAR. He does now.
-
I guess a digital speedo option would be helpful, esp on roads like the A9 which runs from Perth to Inverness and has l-o-n-g stretches of average speed cameras. In that situation though I just use the sat nav view map thang which gives your an actual digital speed anyway, and I set the cruise control accordingly.
Sad to see you reject the CX5 just for this, it is really a great car.
-
I'll be completely frank... it seems like penny-pinching to me.
It's like the rear air vents that reviewers have been on about. Save a smidgeon here and there to the detriment of the vehicle. I am not too concerned about that but I use the digital speedo all the time; I do not look at the dials at all. I actually think dials are a bit of an anachronism, just like the silly massive handbrakes.
That said, it's not out of the running completely... because of 2 things... 1 is that I'm going to have a look at the Q3 later today but that'll come in over £35,000 and that's not something you just forget about, 2 is that I'm going to have a look and see whether any kind of digital speedo. can be purchased and installed in cars to give accurate readouts... if it was small and unobtrusive and battery powered, then maybe I could stick it somewhere? I would be happy with that.
The road you mention, I'm not aware of - but there are roads like that around here as well, and the M1 has had sections of 50mph average speed checks for years, and will do for years I bet.
Please tell me more about the sat. nav. view map thing that gives you an actual digital speed??? Are you saying there is a screen somewhere in the car where a digital speed readout is present???
-
absolutely there is (albeit a small readout). If you have the nav version you just select the nav screen instead of audio or whatever and it shows you a map of where you are, with your actual GPS speed (more accurate than any analogue or digital speedo) and the speed limit for the road. As does any aftermarket satnav device I've ever seen.
-
Thank you!
Can you take a snap with your phone?
I often drive with the map showing, regardless of whether I've got a destination set or not, so this could work a treat. Why has no-one mentioned this before, including the Dealer?
And why-oh-why does the right-hand dial allow you to show average speed, but not current speed? It's just crazy (in my mind). It should just be another option you cycle through. If it can show average speed, then it's obviously measuring speed and a minor firmware update to the car would remedy this.
-
Voila!

-
Well, well, well...
I need to go back to the Dealer.
Thank you!
-
Just be careful there, as that's the display from the earlier model. The MZD connect on the newer ones has a bigger screen with no buttons and it's Navteq rather than TomTom mapping. Upshot is that - as far as I've managed to find out in the one week I've had it - there's no true speed indication on the newer version. It does show the speed limit relevant at the time, which changes to a yellow background if you exceed the limit.
If anyone has found a way to display this on the MZD, please shout up!
Alan.
-
That's annoying, thought we'd made a breakthrough there...seems odd the new system doesn't do that, every standalone satnav unit I've ever used gives you the GPS speed.
Hey ho.
-
Ah.
I was going to go back to the Dealer today, but I got to Audi about 16:00 and I spent too long there. I spent a while looking at the Q3 S line+... it's very nice, all very familiar to me, of course... but I felt it was too small.
I'm now trying to figure out whether the Q3 is smaller than the CX-5... I'm assuming it obviously is, but I could be wrong. It could be 'cos the Q3 had black headlining, I'm not sure... but the space in the rear seats was also cramped and I had trouble getting out due to the middle pillars.
All-in-all, not a great experience. But a lovely car and I fell in love with the sweeping rear LED indicators.
Sadly the Audi salesman put me off a bit (as they often do) as he must have said 3 or 4 times the exact same phrase - "you're a lovely couple, I'd love to do business with you" - I mean, of course - you're a salesman, you'd do business with Ming the Merciless and call him lovely too. Then he kept asking if I thought we could - "do a deal today" - hold your horses there.
Gutted if my hopes of a digital speedo. have been dashed. I was thinking there weren't all those buttons are the screen in the CX-5s I'd been looking at.
Am going to try and find time tomorrow.
-
The Q3 is definitely smaller than the CX5. I and my son are 6 ft 5 so the test is to see if I can sit behind the drivers seat, set for my driving position, both in comfort with plenty of leg and head room. The Audi was a bit of a squeeze and definitely smaller on both fronts, so it fell off my research list. Lovely car and interior though but a hefty price for what you get. Also, the boot is much smaller and would struggle to get two full golf bags in without removing the woods etc. The Cx is definitely better value and service costs are much better too...
-
I test drove a Q3 about 3 1/2 years ago when they first came out before settling on the CX5. It didn't go well as the salesman took me out onto the A52 in Derby, straight into a massive traffic jam. It took 45 minutes to get back to the dealers having covered about 4 miles... >:( He never bothered calling me back! The problem with car salesmen now is that they aren't trained to sell cars. They are trained to sell finance and know s0d all about the cars themselves. Ask them anything remotely technical and they're lost. We looked at a Mini for my wife, and asked "what power does the engine produce?" Answer - "It depends on what you are doing with it". ::) ::)
To me, it was a seriously cramped car (I am 6ft 5, though), but my son who was in the back was struggling as well, he's 5ft11. Having been in both a Q3 and a Q5, the CX5 has more interior space that both. Even the Q7 felt small to me as it seems to have a very high floor, although that model has just been replaced.
-
Thanks all.
Girlfriend is coming back on-side. She said the Q3 looked small when I was in it. She's not a fan of the CX-5, but she likes it a lot better than the Qashqai.
I showed her this - http://autoexpert.com.au/buying-a-car/should-i-buy-the-mazda-or-the-audi
At £32,135 list, I'm starting to wonder what Madza's approach to discounts or deposit contributions is (if I wanted to go the Conditional Sale route)... anyone willing to hint at their own success stories?
-
Sniff. Feeling inadequate with all these 6' 5" posters around...
-
Mazda don't seem to be offering the CX5 on 0% finance as they are on other models so they seem confident they can sell enough cars without it. I started off using Carwow and 6 dealers offered a 5.4% discount. When I visited the dealer, I had also looked at some Internet brokers who were offering around 10% discount, although service and small print issues made me very wary of these offers. At least I had a good idea of what discounts were available.
When I visted the dealer, they offered a trade in figure on my car of about £1300 more than the CAP value but it was the cost to change that matters. After choosing some optional extras ( metallic paint - soul red-, spare wheel, door and boot sill protective film and folding mirrors, as well as the Autoglym package, I then started some negotiating . Eventually I ended up getting a 7.8% discount and free mats, with the extra discounts coming from the extras. Of course the salesman said he was only left with £200 on the car, so I asked him to throw in his shirt too ...
I reckon if I had gone in at the end of the month, when they were closer to volume bonus targets, some more might be had, but I do believe that, if you're developing a long term relationship with the dealer and want them to be around in future, it's not good to totally skin them. Yes, they'll make something on the PCP finance but 5.9% is a reasonable rate.
Overall I'm happy with the deal and the service so far. Hopefully the car will live up to my expectations!
-
Sniff. Feeling inadequate with all these 6' 5" posters around...
:)????????????
-
Almost 8% is not to be sniffed at. That would be a nice saving on what I'm thinking of.
-
Just make sure you do your research first... and let the salesman know ... I always keep the negotiations business like, though my wife at that point cringes and goes off for a wander around the showroom. According to What Car , if you're going for the most expensive model, their guide price shows a 6.08% discount so you won't be far away from that tasty discount.
-
I had almost exactly the same experience as Caldean from the same dealer.
I went in knowing that I might get 11% discount on-line and very quickly settled for around 8% in the showroom - which was what I really wanted anyway. Prior to that I had approached two other local(ish) dealers. One offered around 6.5% and the other refused to offer a competitive quote!
-
Thank you, heading back down there just to see what the lay of the land is...
-
I'm back.
The Dealer has offered £30,000 dead on for:
Sport Nav 2.2 Diesel AWD
Stone trim leather (they call it White now)
Safety Pack level 1
Jet Black Mica
And that would take up to 14 weeks to get to me.
Alternatively, I can have the same car - but in Soul Red Metallic - for the same price, but could be with me in 14 days.
I asked about the auto-folding mirror kit (which they were not aware of yesterday) and whether it could be thrown-in. He has said he'll need to ask Service how much their fitting charge is and will then phone me. He didn't seem hopeful as he's claiming that this deal is the best they can go to. I'm suspecting he'll offer me the parts for free and ask me to pay for fitting. I'm also not 100% sure it's a true 8% I've been offered (he said something about VAT) but I work best in absolute numbers anyway.
So £30,000 and up to 14 weeks for Jet Black or £30,000 and 14 days for Soul Red.
Do you guys think there is more wiggle-room for the Dealer here?
Do you think the white seats will be best offset against the black paint? I do. I like the red, but it's not what I ideally wanted. I would go with it, though.
Any advice or just idle thoughts welcome.
-
Am I right in thinking the reg plate changes from 15 to 65 on 1st Sept?
If so then that will affect your resale value depending whether you get a car registered in the next 14 days or 14 weeks. So in essence your £30k red one is worth less to you long term than the £30k black one.
If I'm right then that could affect your decision, or you could use it as a bargaining chip if he desperately needs to make a sale pre 1 September.
-
No, he was saying it could be with a new plate. Generally it's not something I think about.
-
Personally I would take the Soul Red . Keeping a black car clean and polished is a part time job. I should know - I have one ! If the paint is a thin as some say, you'll spot every blemish in black . You're also getting the red at a discount - it's usually £120 more than the black.
Providing the car is registered after 1st September, your residual value will hold up better by about £800 or so. Anyway, isn't it better to enjoy the new car sooner rather than later ??
-
My A4 Sport was black, my A4 S line was black and my A4 Black Edition... well, it's black. ;)
I like the idea of getting more expensive paint for no premium... but if the Jet Black and Soul Red were both available, then I'd go with black, for sure.
I did also like Deep Crystal Blue in the flesh... almost black.
I still need to hear about these mirrors. I can wait until the deal is right, the Dealer might come under a tiny bit of pressure (hopefully, in a pleasant, respectful way).
-
I have to come clean and relay to the forum that I popped back into Jeep over the weekend. Had another look at the Cherokee.
Yes, they're more expensive. Yes, I personally don't like the exterior styling as much (although my girlfriend does). But, also yes, it has a nice big digital speedo. in a really nice colour instrument cluster. Yes, it also has proper sans-key door opening (where you just put your hand behind the handle and you don't have to press a button). Yes, it looks of great interest and - finally - yes, it has a 0% APR approach, vs. Mazda's 5.9%. Cash is an alternative to remove that blocker, but why pay cash if 0% is an option in front of you?
I'm going to get them to run some figures... I've not even test driven one yet.
-
Frankly, this is all getting a little tedious.....
-
It does seem a little odd...
Hippogriff, you don't seem to know WHAT you want. The Jeep Cherokee is a totally different segment to the CX5. If money's no object go for the Evoque you mentioned in your first post. Providing it has an acceptable speedo of course.
-
Be prepared to lose a shed load in depreciation with the Jeep.
-
Frankly, this is all getting a little tedious.....
Ha, don't read it - and certainly don't comment on it (you idiot) - if you can't be nice. Jealousy ain't attractive... what a dufus.
-

Why are there direct comparisons of the two on the Internet then? They're about the same size (within a few centimetres in all dimensions), they have AWD, they're 175ps and 200ps, they've both got similar features... yet, certainly not identical... and they're both going to be in the 30Ks.
So, what on earth do you mean?
Can the CX-5 only be compared to the Qashqai? Maybe because it looks good in that compare..? :-X
Cherokee also has ventilated seats... a unique, possibly, in this segment.

Thanks, but... if I cared deeply about that then I would probably go with the Q3 to be honest. I care about having a nice car and having fun.

Would you please not reply in such a manner as you have to another of our members. He was voicing an opinion (to which he is entitled) regarding the rather prolonged selection process you are going through. There is no need for name calling and your personal assessment of another members intelligence is not something we wish to share.
Lastly as he is an owner of a CX-5 (which you are currently not) I fail to see where the "jealousy" comment is of any value.
Please refrain from making further derogatory comments against other members of the community.
Thank you

It does seem a little odd...
Hippogriff, you don't seem to know WHAT you want. The Jeep Cherokee is a totally different segment to the CX5. If money's no object go for the Evoque you mentioned in your first post. Providing it has an acceptable speedo of course.
Well according to What Car the base Jeep is nearly £9000 more than the top CX5, is nearly a foot longer, 4 inches wider and higher, has a big growly 3.0 V6, is almost double the kerb weight, is slower, does less MPG, is a significantly higher insurance group, and has the kind of wallowy handling that CX5 drivers choose to avoid.
Other than those minor issues, very comparable, yes.
Look, buy what you like. People have tried to help you on here but I'm done.

I've never heard anyone worry so much about the lack of a digital speedo! Buy a Nextbase dash cam from Halfords http://www.halfords.com/technology/dash-cams-parking-sensors/dash-cams/nextbase-incarcam-402g-professional (http://www.halfords.com/technology/dash-cams-parking-sensors/dash-cams/nextbase-incarcam-402g-professional) it can be configured to show GPS speed and a compass + the additional benefit of making sure you are covered if someone causes an accident.
It's my first time with Mazda and I'm looking forward to getting my CX5 Sport Nav at the end of September. After quite a bit of research into SUVs, I did some 3 day long test drives in the RAV4, XTrail and CX5. I discounted the Q3 and BMW X1 early on as they were too small and the level of standard kit is incredibly poor by comparison. The XTrail is a good size and is quite nice inside but the engine is too weak.
I'm moving from a BMW 3 Series M Sport and have had BMWs for the last 8 years and I have to say I'm impressed at the standard kit and value for money of all the cars I test drove.
Finally, I have driven many Jeeps in the past and they are just terrible. The new versions may have improved but I'd still not go there.
I opted for Jet Black, stone leather and the safety kit. Anyone got any pictures of the facelift in jet black with stone leather... Never seen the combination on the road. Fingers crossed it works!
