Winter wheels on and quick brake pad check.
« on: October 30, 2018, 06:38:01 pm »
Put the winter tyres on.  These are ex 15 model 17 inch wheels with Yokohama W Drives;

On a KF, all that happens is you get this TPMS light but no bleeps or buzzers driving you mad;

Using a heavy duty pressure wash through the wheel spokes has kept it really clean;

Time for a quick look at the pads.  One 14mm bolt out and swivel the caliper up;

7000 miles - getting half worn.  Doesn*t surprise me given the area I live in.

Compared with a new Pagid pad...........

Quick clean, grease the abutments with Ceratec and I*ll look at them when the summers go back on in April.  I have not cleaned the caliper at all!

I wonder why that should be? I've been changing my wheels over twice a year for the past 3 years (KE model) and have never once had a TPMS light illuminate let alone anything audible following the change. My routine is to change the wheels, check the pressures which usually entails letting some air out as I over-inflate the removed wheels prior to storing them, ignition on and press the reset button until I get the confirmation beep.

In fact I've only had the TPMS light illuminate once during ownership and I put that down to the extra load on the back wheels when the caravan was hooked on the back. Before coupling I increase the pressure in the rear tyres and set the TPMS - maybe I should try resetting the TPMS once the caravan is on the back.

Anchorman will correct me If I'm wrong but on the KF's the TPMS uses tyre pressure sensors in each wheel, so when you change wheels with no sensors the car expects to communicate with them and can't so throws up the warning light. Note that on the KF's there's no TPMS reset button on the dash.
The internet is a huge dumpster. You have to look hard to find anything useful.

Yes, you're correct, Jonno21 - I've just had a look at the German CX5 forum as of course over here we are far more likely to change our wheels twice a year.

Twabrigs.  I’ll put the kettle on if you’re passing any time.

jonno and deeps. Quite right, it’s all down to the difference in systems. The old one uses the ABS sensor to determine rotational speed if the rolling radius changes due to under inflation. It’s a wonderfully simple system but it doesn’t meet current standards as it fails if the ABS/TRC goes down.
