Self-dipping headlights

Do these work in practice? I've been on full beam but coming up behind cars in front or meeting oncoming vehicles I've never seen them dip and go back to full beam automatically...as I hate people who dazzle other drivers I end up chickening out and do it manually before it gets a chance to operate itself.

Do I just need to hold my nerve and trust the system?

I'm now wondering whether they are standard issue. I thought I'd read somewhere that they were, but perhaps not. That would explain why I haven't seen them working!
