USB charging
« on: October 21, 2015, 11:20:57 am »
Anyone else having issue with charging a phone from the front USB sockets (on the facelift model)?

I was using a HTC One M7 previously, having moved the Brodit holder from the old car, but modifying the lead to use the USB instead of the old 12v socket. Now have a HTC One M9, have fitted a new Brodit holder to suit and - although the phone shows the "charging" symbol - the charge doesn't increase at all.

The Brodit holder does come with a USB lead plus a USB/12v socket adaptor, but it won't reach the 12v socket in the armrest console (and I hate having leads trailing everywhere, anyway)

Hi Alan,

I've had my facelift model for 2 weeks now and was under the impression initially that the usb sockets in the front could only sustain your battery and not actually charge them.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that they are in fact charging my iPhone 5S. Not the fastest of charges but at least topping it up.

I've used both an official Apple cable and a decent 3rd party cable with no problems.

Paul.

I use the cigarette lighter with a charger with a twin USB (1A and 2.1A) and it chargers my Galaxy note 4 and my partners iPhone 6 with no problems

Apparently links to other Mazda sites are deleted?

So anyway there is a long thread about the usb charging on mazda247.
I'll also stop putting links on mazda247 mentioning this site.

My usb tested arrived today after a month, I think its quite good, using it at home to check the charging current into the mobiles.

Have also found that there is an Android app called Ampere which will display the charging rate on your phone with it connected. have just downloaded and will try it later...

Thanks Al
Installed the "Ampere" app, I love Apps, and just compared the usb reader to the phone.

Phone seems to have a poor resolution showing 200 or 300ma with a quick study, at 300ma on the phone my gadget says 420ma.

Make of that what you will, because I have no idea how accurate either one is.

Updated
Tried the app earlier.
1)With phone on USB connection to USB port on PC screen, shows 100mA
2)With phone on USB lead connected to 1.5A rated charger that came with phone, shows 310mA
3)With phone on USB lead connected to a mains surge protector block with USB charger built in, shows 870mA
4)With phone in Brodit USB holder, shows 430mA
5)With phone on USB lead connected to top USB socket, shows 310mA (this socket is the one the Brodit normally connects to)
6)With phone on USB lead connected to lower USB socket, shows 480mA
7)With phone on USB lead connected to 12v cig plug, shows 860mA

As it stands, 1) doesn't charge the phone (it used to on my previous HTC One M7), 2) and 3) do. Can't confirm the others as I just plugged in long enough to test current rate. Best guess is that the app reads low, possibly dependant on what the phone is doing at the time? Am also beginning to suspect that different leads have different abilities.
