Canine companions

Monty the Cockapoo has just joined our family (our first dog).

He's 12 weeks old and will shortly be able to venture out into the big wide world, so I'm looking into what's what in terms of accessories for transportation/comfort/safety etc.

Does anyone who may already have been down this route, care to share what has worked for them, or things to avoid?

Hi Huxie,

This is one of the main reasons we stuck with the cx5, DOGS! Ha ha, we carry water, treats and bags, under the floor. Also glass cleaner and a roll of kitchen roll. They do like to wipe their noses on the rear window. One previous cars I had a dog guard fitted, but what I do now is just flip over the retractable shelf to make it harder. Now autumn is here we also carry a towel for paw cleaning.

One thing I have done to both cars is had rear bumper sill strip fitted to protect against paint damage from dog paws with jumping in and out of the boot.

Rear sill strip - check
Boot tray liner - check
Loose boot cover which wraps up back of seat, side panels and folds out over sill - check (although we don't use it for shorter trips)
Leave the boot cover in place, disconnect from hatch, fold it back on itself and tuck the solid edge under the rear headrests to make a "lip" - check

I swear by the Azuga CX-5 bootliner http://www.azuga.de/ . This thing must be bomb proof and reeks of quality. The bootliner remains fitted in my car 7/7 and when the need arises to fold the rear seat flat - no problem, simply unclip the head restraint straps and the liner fold out flat. Not cheap by any means but there again, quality items never are in my opinion. Can be ordered directly from the manufacturer here in Germany of course although I have also seen them on the Amazon UK website but a quick check shows them to be temporarily unavailable.

Nice dogs Al, yeah forgot the liners Deeps have them in aswell i think thats the main thing you need in any vehicle when transporting mans best friends, this is a old one as we have lost the whippet a while back. I was thinking of buying a ramp for the sausages.lol

I've already got Mazda chrome trims on the bumper so I'm going to look into something that rolls out over the bumper for maximum protection and also possibly a dog ramp. Not sure if dogs like them but I love the idea. Will consider the plastic boot tray but then again I'm currently looking at double boot cages with floors so I can carry Monty and a friend's dog in their own spaces for our trips out and about. Also saves on glass cleaning

Funnily enough, Richard, I too had considered the 'official' liner but then dismissed the idea because I pack an awful lot of camping equipment in the boot when out and about with the caravan and this liner doesn't offer enough protection to either the back of the seats or indeed the sides. My previous cars have always had carpeting around the sides of the boot area rather than the current rather too easily scratchable plastic.
