SCBS and TPMS warnings

When driving our car (2013 cx5) recently the SCBS, TBMS and engine inspection warnings all lit up, although the car continued to drive without a problem. Having taken it to our local garage they have checked car over and there does not seem to be any problem with the car but the SCBS and TBMS warnings are still showing. We have had this problem before and it coincided with having our windscreen replaced but the warning lights went off after a short while. This time we had a very small chip repaired at the same time as these warnings starting. The lights are on all the time now and the garage are struggling to figure out why. Could it be related to the windscreen repair? Any advice gratefully received. Thanks

You don't say whereabouts on the screen the repair was carried out. However the SCBS system relies upon a lazer mounted at the top of the windscreen to sense objects in the way of the car and the closing speed in order to activate the brakes if necessary.

If in the initial instance the replacement was not done correctly then it might have caused the warning light situation. Likewise if the repair interfered with the lazer positioning, then this too could be causing the problem again.
Further, because of the nature of the interaction between the SCBS system and the braking system of the car, then this could likely be the cause of your TPMS warning. The braking system would monitor the tyre pressures so as to compensate any deficiencies due to inappropriate tyre pressures.

If both the SCBS and the TPMS are showing warnings then they should not be ignored.

Anything that is likely to jeopardise your safety is a serious matter and as such I highly recommend that you take your car to a Mazda dealership to have them rectify this situation.

I had my windscreen replaced last year. The Autoglass engineer mentioned as he was leaving that the camera system might need re-calibrating, but it's not something that they can - or will - do. That was never mentioned when booking  Dealer did it for me FOC as it was in for a service shortly after, but I think they do normally charge for this. I did check with my insurers, this is also covered under the windscreen claim policy, you need to advise them separately though.

The issue could be related to a bad wheel speed sensor and unrelated to the windshield.

The SCBS and the TPMS systems use data from the wheel speed sensors and if this data stream is interrupted error messages will pop up.

The traction control and ABS systems also use data from the speed sensors, I'm surprised that you're not seeing errors related to these systems as well.


I had a speed sensor fail in my 2012 VW Jetta TDI and the dash lit up like a Christmas tree with failures from all of the above mentioned systems. Fortunately in the VW system I was able to connect a diagnostic tool (VCDS) and my laptop to determine that the failure was in the right rear speed sensor. A new sensor sorted it.

I would suggest that the garage you have taken it to does not have the equipment or knowledge to diagnose the problem. Any kind of error such as this will be near impossible to diagnose without specific diagnostic equipment, which only a Mazda specialist or a Mazda dealership will have so in general you are wasting your time using a "local garage" for diagnostic work on a newer car with complicated electronics like a CX-5. Find a good independent specialist local to you to look into these sorts of issues for you if you don't want to pay main dealer prices

Hi Just had these warnings as well on my CX-5 and this was coupled with an Engine Inspection Required warning, sluggish acceleration and loss of the gear shift indicator. Also when I plugged a code reader in I got a Turbo Underboost fault (P0299). Turned out it needed a new turbo assembly, specifically because the divertor valve between the 2 turbos had fallen apart.

The fault reappeared after 3 weeks of waiting for a new turbo to be supplied and fitted, and now they're saying one of the turbo wastegate control solenoids (they sit on top of the gearbox) has also failed.

Seemed odd that TPMS and SCBS were related to turbo or turbo control failure, but the service manager said that the car knocks off these systems whenever there's a serious engine fault code.

Also strange was that a CX-5 with a faulty turbo is still quicker than the RAV4 hire car they gave me! I can safely say now having had a 3 week test drive in a 2015 RAV4 - to not bother with one of those as an alternative.
