Wheel and tyre sizes

Afternoon, these may seem really silly questions but I am looking to get winter tyres and possible wheels for my CX5. However, I do not understand why some CX5s have 17" tyres and others 19".
Mine has 19", and here is the really silly question  ... can I put 17" alloys on or must they be 19"?

Both sizes have the same rolling circumference.  The 19" tyres have a smaller sidewall 'height', which gives better handling but worse bump cushioning.
You can fit 17's if you wish, I did this with my previous 2014 Sports Nav.

Just to give you more options, you could look at 19" all season tyres, although that's pricey.

I bought some 17s off eBay.  Hunted round and got some brand new Yokohama W Drives.  They are excellent.  The 19s go back April to November.

I've run a diesel Sport Nav CX-5 Automatic with 19" tyres for nearly 4 years now with nearly 62,000 miles mainly on motorways but I regularly take it off road on forest trails and hill tracks where I appreciate the ground clearance. All the tyres are 225/55 R19 and the front tyres are needing replaced soon.  Is it possible and what difference would it make to the transmission, speedo etc  if I fitted 235/55 R19 all round? There's only something like 11mm difference in diameter and width which would give higher clearance and overall difference of only 1.5%. I know my actual speed would be greater than the speedo but I read my speed from the Sat Nav anyway so that's not going to make any difference.  Basically am I going to knacker the engine and is it safe to fit the slightly larger tyres?

If you fit all 4 it should be OK as long as they don”t foul widthwise.

You would also lower the torque and acceleration proportionately; however, I doubt it would be very noticeable?
