Weak handbrake

I had an issue yesterday.  I parked the CX-5 on a slight gradient for a few hours when I came back it had moved at least 15ft and was stopped by a rock with a rear tyre.  The rock wasn't very big so the car must have been moving slowly otherwise the car would have gone over it.  So I'm thinking the brake wasn't fully on.


Could a sticking caliper piston cause this.


Has anyone else had this issue?

Only time this happened to me was a old vauxhall astra mk3. Mine travelled about 300 feet and 450 quid for new bumper and bonnet, wing. Would you say that the brakes were warm after your journey? Only issue i have had was on the 2016 sport nav,  the handbrake needed a new module as handbrake wasnt releasing both sides at the same time. Leave your drive wheels turned into kerb till you get it sorted please update how you get on. Thanks

I would recommend that you always leave your car in 1st gear and never trust a handbrake.

There is a bigger issue here.  It's a Mazda problem I would assume the same system is used on most electric handbrake Mazda vehicles and it may cause an injury or worse.  I have notified my dealer and they are looking into it, if they do not find a fault it will be their liability if it happens again also notifying DVSA/VOSA about this problem may spur Mazda on.


I have been using my gears for the moment but this is not the answer.

I totally agree with you, it's definitely a car defect. My driving instructor always taught me to leave a car in first gear, when parking somewhere, and I assumed that everybody was advised to do this while learning to drive.

Update. Mazda dealership could not find a issue, apparently unless it recorded on the car system it didn't happen even though there were two other people that saw it had moved.
 
Contacted Mazda UK via email so it would be registered and printable, they are of the same opinion as the garage which I'm not surprised about.  I done as much as I can for now and have put any liability with Mazda UK.  I do hope this is an isolated incident.

I'm going to pull the electrical connectors and use some dielectric and refit.
