Brake Calipers
« on: January 24, 2015, 10:11:06 am »
Just noticed that the brake calipers on the front wheels are rusting quite badly, has anyone suffered the same?  Also the brakes are noisy even after a long run, almost as if they are binding.

My CX5 brakes seems to freeze up and stick, more so at start up. If I have not used the car for a couple of days then the brakes are noisy at start and low speed. Is this normal? Or do I need to get it checked? Rgds

The CX5 has hill-start assist, which holds the footbrake on momentarily when you release the pedal. Pulling away in a manual (like mine), you'd normally have the handbrake on and not use the footbrake, but with an auto you'd have your foot on the brake pedal, so it could be that releasing? I live on a hill and having the hill start assist is useful when pulling away uphill, but a PITA when parking downhill behind something as you get a series of stop/start rolling judders rather than a smooth controlled stop.

It doesn't take long for a surface layer of rust to form on the disks when the car is standing, I've seen a film appear in less than 24 hours. It's probably that being rubbed off.

I have noticed rust forming on the disks if the car has been standing for couple of days or more. It seems to be a norm for such type of brakes and have been told that it does not have any impact on the braking efficiency of the car.
My CX5 is an auto, when the brake paddle is pressed firmly and then released the brakes make a noise suggesting that they are sticking. This also happens when stopping on a flat road without an incline.  Rgds, BD

Sticking pads usually happen if the car is parked up over night with wet brakes.

I keep my car garaged and always park it up with the handbrake off but in gear when the car is wet.

Any one painted the calipers yet? If so, did you do them in situ? I'm planning on doing mine yellow with the proper VHT paint

I don't plan to paint the callipers on my CX-5 but I did paint all four of them on my Mazda 6 Sport several years ago. I painted them yellow with the VHT paint and did them in situ. I used a small artists brush and took my time - I think they took 2 coats. You need to clean them thoroughly first and I think the paint came with a spray degreaser to do this.  Obviously you could make a better job and paint the backs of them if  you took them off but they looked fine and made the car stand out. Think I even bought some "Mazda" calliper transfers in grey from EBay to finish them off!!!

However, I went off the look after a while because it's usually only high performance cars that have the callipers painted and those that are yellow tend to be on Porsches! I repainted them black.

Agree - you only have to look at any second hand car lot.
