CX-5 Keyless Concern

Why is it possible to leave the engine running and walk away with the key in your pocket. How far can you, or anyone else, get with the car? NO WARNING!

I don't know how far the key has to be before the car would turn off, but I assume the feature is there so that in winter, the engine can be warmed up and windows de-misted, whilst the "driver" can nip back inside the house to keep warm!

Hi, I asked that very question when I collected my car last Friday..  The reply was, "the ignition key is only active when the key is inside the door pillars ".

Haven't tested it yet, but at Sainsbury's tomorrow I'll leave the wife in the car with the engine running and step out & walk away & see what happens..  With any luck someone might jump in and drive off with her.. ;D

Sainsbury's car park test inconclusive... I managed to walk some 50 paces away and then circle the car at that distance with the key in my pocket and the engine continued to idle. However, its possible that the engine may cut out if an attempt was made the drive the car so, tomorrow, I'll get my mate to take the key away from the car while the engine is running and then see if I can drive away...  :-\

So, have you seen your mate or the car since? ;)

When I picked up my car from dealer this week I asked him the same,he said engine would continue to run ,but would not restart after being turned off! He said you it would be dangerous for a car to just cut out up the road.
I said what if its nicked while engine running  , they could drive it 100 miles away then strip it for parts or sell
Seems a bit daft to me ,will investigate user manual (again)

I have now been driving my CX-5, after collecting it at the dealers for two weeks now, and am totally delighted with the complete car and driving experience. Have covered 500 miles and achieving 34mpg. Still very few CX-5s around my area so when it is washed, and parked in the drive (looking good) I have been amazed at the positive comments form total strangers walking by. Still getting used to the key less entry system, and one disappointment is the amount of plastic used in the bodywork!!!! Does this apply to all new manufactured cars now?

Had the same reply from my dealer.
I've just looked at the manual which states
"If the vehicle is started and the key is not in the vehicle, the vehicle will not restart after it is shut off"
