Do these only operate when the engine is running but the main headlights turned off?

Handbrake also turns them off; so if you are driving then halt in traffic and engage the handbrake the DRLs go out.

Which means of course that i-Stop also turns them off since the handbrake needs to be on for i-Stop to work.  Seems a bit daft to me.

Not sure about that on mine, maybe it's different for the revised model but I'm pretty sure the iStop works on mine without the handbrake

Applying handbrake turns off DRLs. i-stop operates regardless of whether handbrake is applied or not (as long as the car is stationary and in neutral)  but I-stop does not turn off DRLs.

On my Mazda 6 automatic, the gearbox doesn't need to be in neutral for i-stop to work, it just needs the car to be stationary and the brake pedal pressed.  Applying the handbrake cuts the DRL's, but i-stop does not.

Don't think so, I believe the DRLs only go off with the handbrake but the iStop doesn't interfere with them (or the audio or anything else).
