Underbody Corrosion
« on: December 09, 2020, 03:35:26 pm »
Hello all,

As someone who was finally expecting to buy a (nearly new) CX-5 in the next couple of months, I was very concerned to have found the following
video on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWNNE7oXnL4
Although this comes from across the Atlantic I'm guessing most of it applies to European models also. The part that shocks me is the amount of underbody corrosion on such a new car.
Since I usually keep my car for several years, this make me think I should revise my plans. I will be interested to hear what you current owners think and have you noticed the same on yours.

I had my first cx5 8 years,  never failed mot, driven for hundreds of miles thru harsh scottish winters ( passing dozens of gritters ) if you do your best to keep clean it will last longer,  i would be more concerned with the body paint over underbody tbh,  you say several years if thats below 8 then i wouldnt let that concern you. Also the last 3 years of ownership i ran that car like a works van and thats why i ended up replacing it with the 2020 model.

I understand what you mean about body paint as I believe Mazdas
have been getting some bad press about paint chipping. My current car
(Sportage) is now over 9 years old. I now want an auto but I don't want a double clutch gearbox. Everything about the CX-5 appealed to me until I chanced upon this video and it has now raised some doubts. I guess will have to visit some dealers and have a crawl under some older CX-5's and have a look for myself.
Thanks.

You could go down waxoil route, and get car treated regardless of make and model

Indeed I could and many years ago I considered it the norm . In 1976 I had a Mini Clubman Ziebarted but find it hard to believe that 44 years later it's still necessary.
Something tells me that perhaps I should steer clear of the CX-5. Nevertheless I will reserve judgement until I have checked out a few UK cars.
